About Us

The majority of Troost’s images range from classical scenes of the Maine & NH coasts and the working nautical waterfront to other quintessential New England scenes. Work from outside of New England, recently added to the portfolio, includes a selection of scenes from the southwestern United States, and a small collection from a visit to Egypt too.

Troost is a self-taught photographer. He began selling his work in 1991, pursuing it as a full time career by 1993. Beyond the all-important composition of an image, Troost typically creates his images with natural or existing light conditions and with only the occasional use of such filters as a polarizer, Troost takes great pride in his portfolio, now numbering well over 800 images. Virtually all of his images are printed as true to the original film where applicable or to the original digital capture as possible, with very occasional exceptions which are appropriately identified and labeled.

Troost has Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, and also a minor in Ocean or Marine Engineering. He graduated from UNH in 1983. Of the several professional jobs held before switching to photography most were also of a nautical nature.  Under the business name of Seacoast Impressions, Troost began selling his scenic and landscape work of the Maine and New Hampshire coasts as note cards and as smaller matted or framed prints. While the card business as a whole may be in decline due to email and cost of postage, etc., Troost is still successful today, selling his cards and smaller prints to gift shops, cards shops, galleries and directly too, to many businesses and individual collectors. The increasing sales of his larger prints over the last few years and the simultaneous advances in fine art printing technology for giclée or digital fine art prints and the ability to create stable, archival, heirloom quality prints of his work in his studio, led to the formation of Troost Fine Art Photography.

Troost has spent several years learning the processes necessary to create archival, digital fine art prints from his photography. Using high-resolution film scanners, the film is scanned into large digital files. Mirroring only necessary and traditional darkroom image adjustments, such as minor color and tonal corrections, with other minor blemish corrections for dust or scratches, coupled with “sharpness” adjustments and resizing for printing, the file is prepared for printing. Careful media selection with an emphasis on print longevity, appearance, and quality, results in the reward of individually crafted fine art prints of the highest caliber, a process Troost describes as “Handcrafted with Vision”.

Today his portfolio contains some of the finest photographs available in the region. Troost is an active state juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and participates annually in the Craftsmen’s Fair at Mt Sunapee, NH. A nine day show spanning the first two weekends in August, it is the oldest and finest of its type in the nation. Troost is also a co-founder of and assists in organizing events such as the Portsmouth Holiday Arts Tour and the highly acclaimed annual holiday craft fair promoted by Seacoast Artisans, which he of course also participates in as well.

His work is available at many local retailers with the widest selection of work available daily at Tulips on Market Street in Portsmouth. Troost is also an accomplished portrait photographer and has photographed over 100 weddings and countless portraits. Occasional “light” commercial work and photographing the art & craft work of fellow artisans round out a typical day.  As an accomplished printer of fine artwork, Troost also prints for other artists and the occasional commercial applications too. His note cards can be custom greeted and produced in any quantity an activity which tends to keep him quite busy during the holidays!  Please contact us for any additional information or with any questions you may have.
